Abby Cannon JD, RD, CDN is the founder of Abby’s food court! She is a Registered Dietician Nutritionist on a mission to teach others how to live an eco-friendly life. Abby is a sustainability expert. She uses her passion and impressive social media following to share her message. She runs a blog offering information on one-on-on counseling, grocery store tricks, recipes and a variety of blog posts regarding nutrition and sustainability. It is truly a one-stop destination for many questions you may have regarding sustainability. We chose to interview Abby to discuss her passion for saving the planet. Here at Seasonal Sammy we believe teaching children the value of local produce is essential to living a sustainable and balanced lifestyle.    

Q. What brought you to the field of nutrition, wellness and sustainability?   

A. Three months into my first job as an attorney, I knew something had to change. The stress of my job was getting to me and I wasn’t feeling myself. I had to change something! Deep into researching nutrition and wellness, I ultimately fell in love with studying how to improve my life and my work. Then, while in school for nutrition, I found my niche within health and wellness. I realized that considering the environment when making food choices, naturally led to eating the healthiest foods. My passion for nutrition and sustainability only grew from there!

Q.  Why is it important to purchase local seasonal produce? 

A. Seasonal produce has a better nutrition profile than conventional produce that travels on average 1,500 miles from farm to plate. Many nutrients are lost during this journey. Additionally, supporting local farms is amazing for the local economy and supporting local farms that are also practicing regenerative agriculture is even better. And, most importantly, seasonal produce tastes better!

Q.  As a dietitian and sustainability expert how do you encourage clients to eat their fruits and veggies?

A. I make it fun and doable. Focusing on all the different delicious ways we can eat our fruits and vegetables, makes it much less daunting. I figure out ways to get fresh produce into foods and meals that my clients already love. Then, we start to get more experimental!

Q. What’s the best advice you can give to a kid on food sustainability?

A. Eat fresh fruit for your snack. Ditch the highly processed chips and pretzels that come in single use plastic and enjoy a juicy fruit instead!

A. I use my platform to get people to eat healthier by saving the planet or to save the planet by eating healthier. What is more exciting than that?
